Exhibition Hall Alfonso XII. Ancient Instruments of Torture

Exhibition Hall Alfonso XII.

Address: C/ Alfonso XII, 24 Bis - 45002 TOLEDO

Telephone: +34925227327

The exhibition hall “Alfonso XII” hosts the exhibition “Ancient Instruments of Torture”, that inquires into the social changes which resulted in the practice of torture and the organization of the inquisitorial courts in Europe since the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

There is an analysis that arises from a selection of texts, engravings and the torture machines used often by the secular and ecclesiastical courts to force confessions. The exhibition is organized into five blocks.

The first two show social, political and religious aspects that encompass the activities of the Court. The third is focused on the steps followed once the inquisitorial process had been started, the fourth is focused on the “Auto de fe” (public penance of heretics by the Inquisition in medieval Spain and Portugal), and the fifth is focused on "Witches and sorcerers traffic".

The exhibition can be visited from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 21:00 every working day. On Saturdays, holidays and long weekends, the timetable is continuous from 10:00 to 21:00.

Art Circle

An old Mudejar church converted into a cultural and leisure centre. This is the Toledo Art Circle, located in the church of San Vicente, where exhibitions, concerts, all kinds of cultural activities are held, even becoming one of the liveliest discos in the city at the weekend.

It was an old headquarters during the times of the Inquisition and place of religious worship, now not sacred, the Church of San Vicente was, before being the Art Circle, a lecture hall for the University of Castile-La Mancha. Its conversion after various uses is a way of combining modernity and tradition.

Exhibition ‘Templars and other military orders'órdenes militares'

IMPERIAL MONASTERIO DE SAN CLEMENTE. 17th Century (Next to the Museum of the Councils).

C/ San Clemente, 1.

Telf.: 925 25 25 38

Presents the life and cultural environment surrounding the activity of those knights engaged in safeguarding the holy places to Christianity, and their activity as protectors of life and property of those involved in the battles against the Muslims.
Their role in the conformation of the Catholic Kingdoms at the Iberian Peninsula was decisive.

KNIGHTS AND CHRISTIANS

By 1118 arrived in Jerusalem several members of the French nobility. One of them, Hugues de Payens, together with his companions took the three ordinary vows  of the regular canons - obedience, poverty and chastity - plus a fourth vow to defend the Holy Sepulchre and any pilgrim visiting it. The patriarch of Jerusalem approved the emergence of this new religious- military order, and Baldwin II, king of Jerusalem, admired by the jealousy of these “Poor Knights of Christ” gave them a wing of his palace, becoming known as ‘Knights Templar’.

After several years in Jerusalem, Hugues de Payens and five Knights Templar travel to Europe with three targets: getting the approval of the Order and its rule, recruiting new members and obtaining financial resources to carry out their mission.

The full recognition by the church arrives at the Council of Troyes, in which the rule that would govern the order is approved. With the adoption of the Latin rule in 1139, the Order is under the direct authority of the Pope, which is accompanied by important privileges. After the Council of Troyes, the Templars moved to the Christian kingdoms of Europe looking for support. Its success was great and in few years they  received numerous donations.

The Order of the Temple, from the beginning, counted on an important number of financial resources like private donations and tax privileges granted by the Papacy, which allowed them to lend.
