Toledo and Greco

Born in Crete in 1541, with the name of Domenico Theotocopoulos, where he began painting Orthodox icons.

From there, twenty-six years, traveled to Venice, where he met well the work of Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and Bassano. Later he spent several years in Rome. Around 1575 decided to come to Spain for the purpose of work, like so many other artists in the decoration of the newly launched Monastery of El Escorial.

Thanks to his friendship with the Dean of the Cathedral Don Diego de Castilla, and came with his first commission, making the three altars with their paintings at the Toledo convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo.

Of the original paintings are the two Saints John the altar and the Resurrection of Christ to San Ildefonso on the side.

Soon after, the Primatial See the Booty entrusts the garments of Christ on Calvary (1577-1579) later known as spoliation, who chairs the neoclassical cathedral altar of the sacristy. It was a highly controversial work, because the Counter presenting Jesus demanded tortured, publicly humiliated by being stripped naked, suffering human pain, while El Greco shows him superhuman, wearing a bright red coat.

In 1580, he painted for the Dump the Martyrdom of St Maurice and the Theban troops, but his personal way of presenting not pleased the prior of the monastery or the monarch. The box "not invited to pray." So the Cretan artist would receive more orders from the royal family and live the rest of his life in Toledo, in the former residence of the Marquis de Villena.

He was a man of culture and intellectual concerns, as evidenced by the many long annotations made in books of art, such as treaties of Vitruvius and Vasari.

She made friends with the elite and society cult Toledo (doctors, poets, doctors, the high clergy) of receiving most of its orders.

The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (1586) painted on the occasion of the victory judicial vicar of the church of Santo Tomé against the inhabitants of this town, were portrayed these characters, forming the funeral. His work is the altar of the chapel of San José Toledo.

Another major project was the ecclesiastical order of the altar in the church of the Hospital de Tavera, in which museum displays the only known sculpture artist, a risen Christ, he should be suspended above the tabernacle with invisible strings.

In the famous painting of View and Plan of Toledo, kept in the museum of the painter, the building, located outside the walls, has been placed on a cloud and allows their presence with the rest of the city. It retains the handwritten explanation gives the painter of such a composition. You can also admire their works elsewhere in the vast diocese of Toledo, as is the Hospital of Charity at Illescas or the Monastery of Guadalupe. He wanted his son also were a painter, but Jorge Manuel opted for architecture, leaving several samples of his work in Toledo. The death of the Greek, which was well known, in 1614, was buried in the convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo. However, due to the sale of the crypt where his remains rested, and in light of the express intention of transferring their child to the Church of San Torcuato, there is no absolute certainty that remain there. The church of San Torcuato was demolished in 1868, losing the chance to find the truth.
